Library and Archives is Pleased to Collaborate With Black History Ottawa in Launching Black History Month 2010

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Jan. 28, 2010) - Library and Archives Canada is pleased to collaborate with Black History Ottawa for the official launch of Black History Month 2010, a celebration highlighting the many achievements and contributions made by people of African descent. The Opening Ceremony will be held on Sunday, January 31, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. in the Auditorium of Library and Archives Canada, located at 395 Wellington Street, Ottawa.

The Mayor of Ottawa will attend the event and will read the official Black History Month 2010 Proclamation. Several individuals will receive 2010 Black History Ottawa Community Builder Awards for their roles in promoting Black Canadian History or community leadership in the National Capital Region. The program also includes musical entertainment and inspirational remarks by other special guests.

Inspired by African American scholar, Dr. Carter G. Woodson, Black History Month is observed in North America during the month of February. The theme for 2010, "Our Canadian Story," underlines the contributions of Black people to Canada and the challenges and successes they have experienced in the process. This theme is evident in all the planned activities, which also serve to celebrate the pivotal role of not-for-profit and volunteer-led community organizations in promoting the societal integration of Canadians of African descent and improving their quality of life.

Black History Ottawa will present a variety of cultural activities and films during the month of February in the LAC auditorium, 395 Wellington Street, Ottawa. For information on all the activities, consult www.blackhistoryottawa.org.
