Peterborough, Ontario: Celebrating its 8th year of generating a buzz about recreational fishing, National Fishing Week, July 1-8, 2007, will focus on encouraging Canadians to take someone fishing.
National Fishing Week is organized by the Canadian National Sportfishing Foundation (CNSF) to promote the magic lure of fresh and saltwater sport fishing and Canada's amazing outdoors. With over 1 million lakes, rivers and streams, plus three oceans, Canada can boast the greatest array of fishing adventures anywhere on the planet.
“Our stats indicate there are many Canadians who want to try fishing but aren’t quite sure how to make it happen,” states Shirley Maloney of the CNSF. “As more and more Canadians discover the benefits of recreational fishing, our goal this year is to remind anglers of the importance of taking someone with them on their next day on the water.”
Fishing is one of the easiest and most affordable ways for families to come together in a meaningful way. It is also one of the finest teaching tools to help youngsters and adults acquire a solid appreciation of our outdoor environment and all of the creatures who rely on us to use these resources wisely. Fishing and other related activities also generate over $7 billion each year for the Canadian economy.
Outdoor organizations, government resource agencies, tackle retailers and volunteers are preparing to host hundreds of events across the country. Clinics, seminars, tournaments, retail sales and derbies are being held in over 100 communities.
